CKA Labs

Twelve labs for the CKA Track. Each uses its own namespace and is self-contained, except that Lab 04 upgrades the cluster Lab 03 installs and Lab 08 needs metrics-server from Lab CKAD-06. All but two run on the kind cluster from Lab CKAD-01. The kubeadm install lab needs virtual machines and has not been run on them; the upgrade lab’s command sequence was run on kind.

The CKA also examines workloads, configuration, Services and Ingress. Those are practised in the CKAD Labs.

LabTitleCore FocusControlled Failure Scenario
CKA-01Stateful Persistence & PVCsDynamic provisioning, a checksum across Pod replacement, static PV binding, reclaim policyClaim that will not bind to a Released volume; missing StorageClass
CKA-02Scheduling, QoS & Disruption BudgetsRequests and limits, QoS classes, topology spread, PDB and node drainDrain deadlocked by a spread constraint and a budget; unschedulable Pod
CKA-03kubeadm Cluster InstallNode preparation, containerd, kubeadm init and join, CNI, cri-dockerd (virtual machines; not run)Preflight failure on join
CKA-04kubeadm Cluster Upgradev1.36 to v1.37: control plane then workers, drain and uncordonDrain blocked by a PodDisruptionBudget and a bare Pod
CKA-05etcd Backup & Restoreetcdctl snapshot save, etcdutl snapshot restore with a revision bump, repointing the static PodStale API server cache after an in-place restore
CKA-06Users & Certificate RequestsCertificateSigningRequest, approval, kubeconfig, RBACBinding to a group nobody belongs to
CKA-07Control Plane & Kubelet Repaircrictl, journalctl, static Pod manifests, kubelet configurationBroken API server, scheduler and kubelet
CKA-08Autoscaling with the HorizontalPodAutoscalerHPA on CPU, load generation, scale-down behaviour<unknown> metrics from a missing request
CKA-09Taints, Affinity, Priority & Static PodsTaints and tolerations, node and Pod affinity, preemption, nodeName, static PodsEvery node tainted; a static Pod that returns after deletion
CKA-10CRDs, Custom Resources & OperatorsWriting and discovering a CRD, installing cert-manager, reconciliationSchema rejections; custom resource ignored while the operator is down
CKA-11Service & DNS TroubleshootingUnguided: four unreachable applications and a cluster-wide faultSelector, targetPort, readiness, NetworkPolicy, CoreDNS
CKA-12Gateway APIGatewayClass, Gateway, HTTPRoute, weights, status conditionsMissing backend, disallowed namespace, unserved port

A highly-available control plane has no lab; see the track’s gap table. Test yourself with the CKA practice set.
